A chronic disorder is the health condition or disease that persist over a long time. According to U.S. National Center for Health Statistics, the term chronic disorder is one lasting more than three months. Chronic disorders are more common in elderly people. About 80% of Americans over 65 years of age have at least one chronic disease and 77% have at least two. And 25% of adults have at least two chronic conditions. Four chronic diseases like heart disease, cancer, stroke and diabetes cause almost two-thirds of death each year.
Chronic disease does not resolve naturally and is usually not completely cured. Some can be life-threatening, such as Cardiovascular Diseases
. Other conditions require a long constant care, such as diabetes. Chronic disease can affect appearance, physical ability and individual independence.
Common chronic diseases include arthritis, asthma, cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, diabetes and some viral diseases such as hepatitis C and AIDS. A disease that lasts a lifetime because it ends in death is a terminal disease.
Unhealthy behavior, especially tobacco use, lack of physical activity, and loss of appetite, are the main causes of major chronic diseases.
